Biography

Thomas was born to Rev. Noah and Martha Blackburn in Tockholes, Lancashire, England in 1784. [1]

Thomas, child of Noah Blackburn and Martha Blackburn, was baptised on 25 Nov 1784 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England.[2] [3]

Around 1804 he was apprenticed in Liverpool to surgeon John McCulloch, who was a friend of his father Noah. After further training in Edinburgh and London he returned to Liverpool in June 1807 and commenced surgical work there and did so for a further 48 years.

In 1808 he married Ann Mercer in Holy Trinity Church, Liverpool. Witnesses were his brother George Blackburn and John McCulloch.

Thomas and Ann had 7-9 children, including Martha, Jonathon Mercer, John, Ann, Samuel, Thomas and Britain.

In 1835 he was living in Camden St, Islington, Liverpool, close to the Royal Liverpool Hospital where it is likely that he worked.

Tragedy struck in 1840: 'John age 26 and Britain Blackburn (age 20) sons of Thos and Ann Blackburn of Liverpool, lost at sea on their return from Brazil. They sailed from Rio de Janiero for Newport 9 February 1840 and were never heard of more'

In the 1841 census Tho (age 55) was was listed as a surgeon living in Camden St, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.[4]

In July 1841 his wife Ann Mercer died.

In 1842 he is listed as owning 20 shares in the Leeds General Cemetery (also known as Woodhouse Cemetery).

In 1847 Thomas and his two sons (Thomas and Samuel), who were both brokers, lived at 6 Camden St Liverpool. Each owned one third shares in houses at 5 Charing Cross St and 5 Holborn St in Leeds.

Also in 1847, he married a younger widow Catherine Mellor (nee Pennington) (who had 6 children) and together they had a son Robert, born in 1848.

In the 1851 census Thomas (age 66) was was listed as a surgeon living in 20 Everton Terrace, Liverpool, Lancashire, England along with his second wife Catherine and their children. [5]

Thomas died age 71 on 28 November 1855 in Liverpool and was buried at the Everton Necropolis after a service held in the Prebyterian Chapel, Islington, since the Necropolis Chapel would not accommodate the large number of people attending.
